worldsteel: Crude steel output down 3.5% in May 2022

World crude steel production in 64 countries reported to worldsteel in May 2022 was 169.5 million tonnes (Mt), down 3.5% compared to May 2021.


Crude steel output by region

Africa produced 1.1 million tonnes in May 2022, down 18.9% from May 2021. Asia and Oceania produced 126.8 million tonnes, down 1.7%. The European Union (27 countries) produced 12.9 million tonnes, down 6.8%. In Europe, others produced 4.1 million tonnes, down 1.7%. Middle East production was 35,000 tonnes, down 10.0%. North American production was 9.9 million tonnes, down 4.0%. Russia and other CIS + Ukraine produced 7.4 million tonnes, down 19.1%. South American production was 3.8 million tonnes, down 2.8%.


Top 10 steel producing countries

China produced 96.6 million tonnes in May 2022, down 3.5% from May 2021. India produced 10.6 million tonnes, an increase of 17.3%. Japan produced 8.1 million tonnes, down 4.2%. The United States produced 7.2 million tonnes, down 2.6%. Production in Russia is estimated at 6.4 million tonnes, down 1.4%. South Korea produced 5.8 million tonnes, down 1.4%. Germany produced 3.2 million tonnes, down 11.5%. Turkey produced 3.2 million tonnes, down 1.4%. Brazil's production was 3.0 million tonnes, down 4.9%. Iran's production is estimated at 2.3 million tonnes, down 17.6%.
